Intent
Children must be able to confidently read in order to access and make progress across the whole curriculum in EYFS, Key Stages 1 and 2. Reading is vital for future learning. We want our children to become fluent, passionate readers who understand the world through books. At YPS, we believe in nurturing a love for reading that extends beyond decoding words to fostering confident, competent, and enthusiastic readers and our teachers act as role models for this. Our primary school reading curriculum is designed to empower students with strong foundational phonics skills using the Read Write Inc. programme, coupled with a rich tapestry of age-appropriate texts spanning various genres and authors. Our intention is to ensure that every child not only learns to read but also learns to love reading, developing vocabulary, comprehension skills and a lifelong passion for literature.
